Getting To Know Ginger

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is a warming spice which comes from the same family as cardamom and turmeric, there’s some good genes right there. It has a big history in making food and sex lives better and with it being used in over 50% of all traditional herbal remedies, it has a big history in making us feel better too.

So, what can ginger do for us?

It’s believed that because ginger is so effective at warming the body, it can help break down the accumulation of toxins in your organs. It’s also known to cleanse the lymphatic system, which we know as, our body’s sewage system.

PAIN RELIEF NATURALLY

Ginger is known to be quite good at relieving all sorts of pain and discomfort. Thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, it makes a good natural remedy to things like migraine and back pain.  

HEALS THE HEART

Good ol’ ginger helps our hearts by lowering cholesterol, regulating blood pressure, improving blood flow, and preventing blocked arteries and blood clots – all of which help reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

CHOOSE THE BEST

To get the best out of ginger, you need to know what to look for. Look for ginger with shiny, taut skin, it should never be wrinkly. It should also be heavy for its size. Then, take a sniff. Is it pungent and spicy? If the answer is yes, your ginger is good to go. Avoid ginger with any soft spots — that’s a sign it’s been sitting around for far too long.

LOOK AFTER IT

If you use ginger a lot, store it in a re-sealable bag, with all the air removed, in the veggie drawer of your fridge. If it’s an every-now-and-then thing, store it in the freezer and grate whenever it’s needed. Fresh ginger will keep for around 2 weeks in the fridge.
